Booklist - 09/15/2022 This cumulative tale explores the progression of making a wooden toy from start to finish. A farmer plants the tree, an arborist tends the tree, a woodcutter cuts the tree down, a woodcarver carves geometric blocks out of the lumber, an artist paints the blocks with colorful bricks, and a driver delivers the blocks to a toy store, where the shopkeeper displays them artfully in the window. Finally, the grandmother buys the blocks to give to her grandchild, who built a masterpiece (“All by himself?” Actually, grandmother helps, too). The story climaxes with an imaginative block structure and then cleverly unravels, repeating each step backward, all the way to the tree itself. Potter’s delicate full-page watercolors display peaceful landscapes and backgrounds, capturing details of each step in the process and concluding with the majestic tree at the heart of the story. A lesson in executive functioning skills or, better yet, a chance for children to shout out the rhythmic pattern as they unwind all the steps in the toy’s creation. - Copyright 2022 Booklist.
