She studied agronomy and botany and was the first female agronomy professor at Cal Poly Pomona and a Ph.D candidate at UC Riverside when she took a creative writing seminar with Tomas Rivera. With his encouragement, she became a writer. Engle received a Pura Belpre Honor for Firefly in 2011, a Newbery Honor and Pura Belpre Medal for Surrender Tree in 2009, and a Pura Belpre Medal for Poet Slave Of Cuba in 2007.
