Author Biography

   Walter Dean Myers was born in Martinsburg, West Virginia on August 12, 1937.  He died July 1, 2014 at the age of 76. His mother died when he was three years old and he was raised by foster parents in Harlem.  He suffered from a speech impediment and began writing as a means of communication.  Myers dropped out of high school and joined the Army.  He then worked a number of clerical jobs at the post office and for a rehabilitation center.  The author went back to school later and graduated from Empire State College in 1984.  He was married twice and was the father of four children, one of whom, Christopher, is a children's book illustrator.
   Myers was known primarily for his young adult novels with African American central characters.  "Fast Sam, Cool Clyde, and Stuff" was an ALA Notable Children's Book in 1975.  "The Young Landlords" won the Coretta Scott King Author Award in 1980 and was an ALA Notable Book and an ALA Best Book for Young Adults.  "Hoops" was the Edgar Allan Poe Award runner-up in 1982.  "The Legend of Tarik" was an ALA Best Book for Young Adults and a Notable Trade Book in Social Studies in 1982.  "Motown and Didi" was a Coretta Scott King Author Award Winner in 1985, as was "Fallen Angels" in 1989.  "Scorpions" was a Newbery Honor Book in 1989 and an ALA Best Book for Young Adults.  "Now is Your Time!" won the Coretta Scott King Author Award and was an Orbis Pictus Honor Book in 1992.  "Somewhere in the Darkness" was a Boston Globe-Horn Book Fiction Honor Book in 1992 and a Newbery Honor Book and a Coretta Scott King Author Honor Book in 1993. Myers received the Ludington Award for his contribution to children's literature in 1993. "Malcolm X: By Any Means Necessary" was an ALA Best Book for Young Adults and a Coretta Scott King Author Honor Book in 1994. Myers also received the Margaret A. Edwards Award for lifetime achievement in 1994. "Blues Journey" was an ALA Notable Children's Book in 2004.
