McKissack worked as a junior high English teacher, a children's book editor, and an instructor at the University of Missouri. Her husband, Fredrick, was also a writer and they collaborated on several books. McKissack will be remembered for her historical fiction and biographies featuring African Americans. "A Long Hard Journey" won the Coretta Scott King Author Award in 1990. "The Dark-Thirty" was a Newbery Honor Book and won the Coretta Scott King Author Award in 1993.
