He received his B.F.A. in communications design with highest honors in 1996. From 1996 to 1999 Nelson worked as a visual development artist at Dreamworks Studios for the feature films Amistad and Arkansas and the animated feature Spirit: Stallion Of The Cimarro. His illustrations have also appeared in The New York Times, Sports Illustrated, and The New Yorker. "We Are The Ship" received the Robert F. Sibert Medal, the Coretta Scott King Author Award and a Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor for 2009. Nelson has exhibited his work in galleries and museums around the country and abroad including the Simon Weisenthal Center, The Museum of African American History in Detroit, The Smithsonian Anacostia Museum in Washington, D.C. and The Bristol Museum in England.
