After serving in the Army in World War II, he graduated from the Sorbonne in Paris. Alexander worked as an advertising copywriter, cartoonist, layout artist and magazine editor. He was an accomplished amateur violinist and he liked cats. The author died in 2007. Alexander is best known for his fantasy novels, particularly the Chronicles of Prydain and the Westmark Trilogy. "Black Cauldron" was a Newbery Honor Book in 1966. "High King" won the 1969 Newbery Medal. "The Marvelous Misadventures of Sebastian" won a National Book Award in 1970.
