Patricia Polacco - In Her Own Words
When did you decide to become a children's writer and illustrator?
- I did not start writing children's books until I was 41 years old. Before that I was a mother, a wife and I restored antiquities for museums.
Who are your favorite picture book authors?
- Dr. Seuss, Robert McCloskey, Wanda Gag.
Where do you get ideas for your books?
- From my family-current events and "life" events. All one has to do is observe life around you.
Which do you usually spend more time on-the pictures or the words?
- It depends on the story.
What is your favorite book that you have done?
- That is like asking which of my children I love the most!
Do you use people you know as characters? If not, where do you get them?
- Yes, but sometimes they are from my imagination based on someone I know.
Do you do many author visits and which ones have been the most memorable?
- Yes. I visit 130 schools a year. They are all memorable.
What do you do for fun?
- Overeat. Watch my goats play-cuddle my sheep (this is true!). Sip tea-rock and day dream.
